The goal of the Boston Retinal Implant Project is to develop a microelectronic retinal implant to restore functional vision to patients with certain forms of retinal blindness. This includes retinitis pigmentosa (the leading cause of inherited blindness in the world) and age related macular degeneration (the leading cause of blindness in the elderly population and the industrialized world). Our implant design has unique features that improve its safety, function and performance. We are currently testing our implant design and as of yet, it is not commercially available.
